Emily dreamt she was floating.

She was lying on her back in the gentle waves of the Great Northern Sea. She was weightless, suspended in warmth, and in a dreamy state of total relaxation. Her body rose and fell with the rolling of the waves.

Taylor was with her. She couldn't see him or hear him, but she knew that he was there

He was her protector.

He took care of her.

This thought comforted her further.

Emily awoke.

She came to with a start. She pulled her head off the horse's neck then felt the cinches that tied her to the pommel of the saddle jerk tight. She felt the soreness in her jaw and realized she was gagged with a stick and cloth formed like a bridal in a horse’s mouth.

She squinted and blinked rapidly to let her eyes adjust to the early morning light then took stock of her situation. She was tied to a horse. Her wrists were tied to the pommel of the saddle and her feet tied to the stirrups. Her horse was tied to the one in front of her and she appeared to be part of some single file line caravan of horses.

The train was heading up in elevation and along a narrow trail. The rider on the horse in front of her was male and wearing dark clothing and body armor. She could see a rifle of some kind sticking out of the scabbard beneath his saddle and a pistol on his hip.

Emily cautiously turned around. The rider on the horse behind her was horrifying. He too was wearing dark clothing and body armor. His face was long, cadaverous gray, and absent a nose. In its place was an elongated red slit looked to have been formed by a hatchet blow. Emily took the man and his deformity as a sign that he was a Descendant. The rider scowled at Emily and she spun around as fast as she could. She fought the urge to cry and instead continued watching her surroundings. She didn't recognize where they were riding but given the constant increase in elevation, she assumed they were in the mountains.

The caravan came to a flat stretch and the trail opened up to allow a better view of what Emily was a part of. She counted 10 horses before her although she couldn't be sure that there were not more. She saw her sister, Jodhi, and two other females on horses in the train. The riders were staggered boy-girl, boy-girl. Emily knew that there was a male behind her but behind him she had no idea.

The train came to a stop and the men dismounted. They untied the women from their saddles and removed their gags and led them to a narrow stream just before the convoy.

“Let me go!” a female voice commanded.

Emily looked five yards before her to see a girl she recognized as Bryce Kennedy pulling away from a tall, well-built man with the small head and face of a boy. His eyes slanted upward, his face was flat, and his ears roughly one third the size of that of normal man.
